Esteem him! Like him! Cold-hearted Elinor! Oh! worse than cold-hearted! Ashamed of being otherwise. Use those words again, and I will leave the room this moment.

Jane Austen
About This Quote

Elinor's treatment of Edward is very different from her treatment of many other characters in the novel. Even though she is close to him, she seems to have little respect for him. She criticizes him constantly and treats him with disdain. She even threatens to leave the room if he ever refers to her as "cold-hearted." Elinor is very judgmental and has a way of making people believe that they are not good enough just because they are different from her, which makes her a very negative character.
